Our family made the big move — from Sydney to Castlemaine in regional Victoria — in 2012 and have happily settled in now. Wild Colonial Girl is about writers and writing, launching a debut novel just_a_girl (and the aftermath), the tree-change life, meeting the locals, settling in a new town with a young family, and how to freelance in a rural climate — interweaving my usual passions: creative writing, books, films, and the impact of technology on our daily lives.
I am a freelance writer and editor, who runs a communications business from home, Freckle Features, while juggling a couple of small children. In between the nappies and the spilt milk, I am editor of the NSW Writers’ Centre magazine, Newswrite, that features wonderfully inspiring articles about writing practice and where I get to work with writers including Angela Meyer, John Safran, Nikki Gemmell, Debra Adelaide, Emily Maguire and Charlotte Wood. I also edited an e-book, Talking Writing, that is a best-of compilation from Newswrite.
My first novel just_a_girl was published by UWA Publishing in June 2013. I’ve heard it said that releasing your novel into the world is like letting your baby crawl across an 8-lane freeway. Let’s see how we go…
